About lord Dattatreya

Most people in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Hyderabad and Telangana, have known of a divine deity, who's three heads and six hands, and is surrounded by a cow and four dogs. Most people are still in conundrum about this divine deity. Some identify him with the primordial formless Shiva, who takes the form as Shankar, and finally as Rishi Durvasa, whilst others associate him with the Vaishnavite cult, associating him with the lord who's the preserver or the Parvardigar of the universes. He's seen as one of the twenty-four incarnations of lord Vishnu. The one eternal reality can be represented in multitude of forms and figures. That primordial reality is lord Dattatreya.

The famous "Dattatreya Vajrakavacham" extols the greatness and attributes of Lord Dattatreya in following words:

|| कदा योगी कदा भोगी कदा नग्न: पिशाचवत्
दत्तात्रेयो हरि: साक्षाद्भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायक: ||

Some times saint, some times the one who enjoys and some times nude, ghost like person,
Dathatreya  is really Hari who can grant  pleasure  and  salvation.
